I am happy to resume the Spouses and Partners Group newsletter! It will appear at the beginning of each month from now on. We’ve had a busy Winter, with lots of new members and many interesting activities. We are a group of amazing people who come from different countries and speak different languages, but have one thing in common: we want to be part of the UNC community. Many of us left family, careers, and homes behind, but we are eager to make new friends and have new experiences during our time in Chapel Hill. This group gives us an opportunity to get to know one another and to have cultural experiences that we can take with us back home.
Our weekly meetings have been well attended throughout the Fall and Winter. Below I have included photos and brief descriptions of some of the major events we had since the last newsletter appeared.
December 15, 2017: This meeting was part of our holiday celebrations. Our group has a tradition of making gingerbread houses around the holidays.
January 5, 2018: Happy 2018! This was our first meeting of the new year. Our activity involved making decorative pillows out of our favorite t-shirts. As you can see from the pictures below, each pillow made a personal statement and reflected its creator’s individual style and personality. But I think the kids had the most fun of all!
February 2, 2018: This was our first baking class of the year. We met downstairs in the kitchen of the Global Education Center. We made shortbread cookies that were fun to prepare and very delicious.
February 8, 2018: Happy Valentine’s Day!
There have been other major developments than our weekly events: some of our group members have had children since the last newsletter appeared. They are a very welcome new addition to our group!
Please remember that our meditation club meets twice every week. It is led by our group member Ruth Pineda. Please email me if you are interested in participating. In addition, we have an English conversation class every Wednesday at 1 PM at International Student and Scholar Services.
Stay tuned for the next newsletter in early April. Bye for now!
